We’ve been chatting to a number of potential new clients who are in a dilemma regarding their digital marketing and digital footprint. In almost all cases, the client knows they need to join the digital world and is torn between the convenient offer from the Practice Management System (PMS) supplier, which includes a free generic website as part of the relationship, and opting for a customised website to promote their practice.
The “free” website is an attractive option; after all, it’s free, and the work is done, set and forget!! However, will it deliver sustainable growth, brand personality and the flexibility needed to control your future?
Its value is in organisation. A well-engineered PMS centralises appointments, billing, client records and workflows. It reduces double-handling and creates a single source of operational truth. Any practice owner or manager will know how valuable this functionality is. A PMS is designed to support your clinic; however, it should not be your brand identity.
Your veterinary skills are unique to you, and your website must communicate those skills, promoting your values, philosophies, and why clients should choose you over your competitors.

Searching for products or services online has changed dramatically, particularly over the past 18 months. While SEO (Google) still dominates the search space, AEO (Answer Generative Optimisation) employed by AI search engines is quickly becoming the search platform of choice for many people. No doubt you have used one yourself at some point. Asking a question on your phone like “Best Thai restaurant near me”, for example, is a form of AEO. Once you use this method, you rarely go back to Google. Your potential clients are no different. They don’t simply look up your phone number; they ask questions.

A PMS website is typically a generic, templated site offered as part of your software package, while a customised website is independently built around your clinic’s brand and goals. A PMS supports operations, but a customised website supports growth. One manages your clinic; the other markets it.
While there is no upfront cost, generic PMS websites often come with hidden limitations. These include restricted SEO/AEO capability, limited content control and minimal design flexibility. Over time, these constraints can cost you growth opportunities.
